Just 15 km from the hotel, Deauville is the star attraction of Normandy’s Côte Fleurie. Created in the 19th century by the Duc de Morny as a “kingdom of elegance” close to Paris, Deauville has managed to keep all its splendour and elegance from the turn of the 20th century. Its superb villas, boardwalk, endless beach, colourful parasols, racecourse and casino only add to this legacy.
It’s famed the world over, among other things, for its American Film Festival that takes place at the beginning of September, as well as its yearling sales and prestigious golf courses. You just have to spend a day or evening in Deauville to really feel this atmosphere. For a seaside promenade like no other, head for the 653 meters of boardwalk where you’ll be astounded by the view of the colourful parasols and the legendary beach cabins.
Don’t miss the charming boutiques and luxury brand shops. There’s also the Villa Strassburger, an iconic Belle Epoque holiday home built for Baron Henri de Rothschild on the location of the hillside farm owned by Gustave Flaubert’s family and the house of Eugène Boudin, a precursor of impressionism. And of course, there’s the casino with its sparkling, glamorous façade, 300 slot machines, electronic English roulette, French and English roulette, blackjack and poker room.
Nearby, its smaller counterpart, Trouville-sur-Mer, is also worth a visit. With its fishing harbour at its heart and soul, it’s perfect for an authentic holiday in Normandy.
